Dick Wolf Signs Two-Book Deal

Dick Wolf, king of the Law & Order brand, has signed a two-book deal with HarperCollins' imprint, William Morrow. Here is the official press release from HarperCollins:

Date: 07/26/2010
Author: Seale Ballenger
Subject: WILLIAM MORROW TO PUBLISH TWO THRILLERS BY DICK WOLF, CREATOR OF THE FAMED “LAW & ORDER” TELEVISION FRANCHISE

WILLIAM MORROW TO PUBLISH TWO THRILLERS BY DICK WOLF, CREATOR OF THE FAMED “LAW & ORDER” TELEVISION FRANCHISE

New York, NY (July 26, 2010) – William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers today announced plans to publish two novels by Dick Wolf, the visionary creator and executive producer behind one of television’s longest-running programs, “Law & Order” (NBC), and its extremely successful other “Law & Order” spin-off franchise series.

The first novel––as yet to be titled––is a tale in the tradition of The Day of the Jackal andThree Days of the Condor, a realistic, high-concept suspense thriller about a major terrorist attack planned for New York City over the July 4th weekend, engaging the Joint Terrorism Task Force and a NYPD Detective who is the city’s last hope to stop the attack.

The two-book deal was acquired by William Morrow Executive Editor, David Highfill, who was sent the project on exclusive submission by Richard Abate at 3ArtsEntertainment, and pre-empted it, buying World English rights, including all Audio and EBook rights, etc. Wolf’s attorney Cliff Gilbert-Lurie and agent Peter Benedek (UTA) made the deal.

Highfill says, “As he has shown us in the authenticity and freshness of his TV work, Dick Wolf is a master of tightly woven, character-driven American stories that feel like they are happening right in front of you, right now, not last week or last year. He will bring just that sense of heightened immediacy and drama to this new novel.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Dick Wolf, one of television's most respected drama series creator/producers, is the architect of one of the most successful brands in the history of television––NBC's "Law & Order." A two time Emmy Award-winning producer, Wolf serves as creator and executive producer of the four "Law & Order" drama series from Wolf Films and Universal Media Studios–– "Law & Order," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and the soon-to-premier “Law & Order: Los Angeles.”

Wolf's "Law & Order"series continue to rewrite the annals of television history. "Law & Order," having just aired its 20th and final season on NBC had been the longest-running current drama series on television. It received 11 consecutive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nominations, the record for most consecutive series Emmy nominations in the history of television (tied with "Cheers" and "M*A*S*H") and won the coveted Emmy in that category in 1997. "Law & Order's" other accolades include: the highly coveted Peabody Award; multiple Emmys; the Crystal Apple Award from the New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting; the Writers Guild Award for Television, and numerous other high ranking tributes.

Wolf has been a creative force in television for more than 25 years, beginning with an illustrious career as a top advertising executive and continuing as one of television's most prolific producer/writers with such series as "Conviction," "L.A. Dragnet," "Hill Street Blues," "Miami Vice," "New York Undercover," "Arrest & Trial," "South Beach" and "Feds and Players." Among his feature-film credits are writer of the screenplay for the hit Paramount release "School Ties," writer and executive producer of "Masquerade," and writer and producer of "No Man's Land."

Wolf's personal honors include such awards as: the prestigious Award of Excellence from the Banff Television Festival; the 2002 Creative Achievement Award from NATPE; the Anti-Defamation League's Distinguished Entertainment Industry Award; the Leadership and Inspiration Award from the Entertainment Industries Council; the Governor's Award from the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences; the 1997 Achievement Award from the Caucus for Producers, Writers, and Directors, the 1998 Television Showman of the Year Award from the Publicists Guild of America, and the 2002 Tribute from the Museum of Television and Radio. On March 29, 2007, Wolf received a star on Hollywood's world-famous Walk of Fame.

Wolf is also an Honorary Consul of Monaco and is actively involved in the principality's prestigious annual television festival, and is its primary liaison with the entertainment community.

Vincent D’Onofrio to Participate in Detox Program with 9/11 Heroes

WENN has reported that Vincent D'Onofrio (Law & Order Criminal Intent) has signed up to participate in the detox program that firefighters and police officers who experienced the horrors and nightmares of 9/11 must undertake, in a show of his support and solidarity. Vincent’s stepfather was a fireman, and Vincent was among the first wave of celebrities asked to help raise morale at Ground Zero after the 2001 terrorist attacks on New York. As Vincent is between movies, he plans to spend much of August detoxing with one of the charity causes he regularly helps to raise funds for - The Heroes Health Project.

Vincent told WENN:

"One of the things that I always knew about my stepdad was he was so different than I was. I'm not that kind of a man. I don't go running into burning buildings when everybody else is running out. I run out too.

"These guys are exactly like him. They don't whine, they don't ask for help and they need it, so I try to ask for help for them.

When 9/11 happened, the U.S. Marshalls put together a list of people to come down to Ground Zero to help raise morale when they weren't finding anybody alive. I was on that list and all I did for 20-something hours was talk to them. I'm gonna go through the detox program with a bunch of firefighters and cops in New York just so I know what it's like.

It's a long, expensive thing that takes up to six or seven weeks to get through and I'm gonna do it. I heard it's pretty painful at times because releasing these toxins through their bodies puts them through a lot of pain to get it all out and it's a horror but I have some time now, so I think I'm gonna start the first week of next month.

I know some of the guys who went through it... who I talk to on the phone all the time and, to hear the journey that they've been on - falling ill and then recovering is amazing... I'm working very hard to try and do the right thing for these guys."

What a wonderful thing for Vincent to do! He's such a class act.

Linus Roache To Play Homophobe on “Corrie”

Back in May, I reported here that Linus Roache (Law & Order) will be guest starring on the UK soap “Coronation Street" along with his brother James. Linus’ father Bill Roache is also a star on the show. Now, On Top Magazine reports that Linus will be playing a homophobe in this role, saying

“In the story to be broadcast in September, Ken Barlow discovers he has a long-lost son, Lawrence (played by Linus Roache), and a grandson, James (played by James Roache).

Lawrence, however, hates his son because he's gay.

“Lawrence is a complete bigot and the language he uses will leave some viewers furious,” the paper quoted an unnamed insider.

“The scenes will pull no punches in expressing some people's hatred toward gay people and what they stand for.”
