Kathryn Erbe: Motherhood Made Her Better

While Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order Criminal Intent) attended the Year of the Mutt-i-Gree gala on Tuesday, January 13 in New York City, she talked with OK Magazine and told them how motherhood has transformed her. Kathryn has two children , Maeve and Carson, with her ex-husband Terry Kinney. She is also a dog lover and the spokesperson for The American Mutt-i-grees Club.

Here’s the excerpt from the article from OK Magazine:

Law and Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe, who is the American Mutt-i-grees spokesperson, brings her mutt-i-gree Lilah to the event. Lilah came from North Shore Animal League last year, and now lives with Kathryn, 43, her daughter Maeve, 13, and son Carson, 5.

“Lilah changed the whole dynamic of the family,” Kathryn tells me. “It brings everyone together. She’s this force of love who does not judge, does not get mad … she just walks around and loves all of us. And when my kids are crying, she immediately goes to them. If they’re hurt, she immediately goes to the area where they’re hurt. She’s an incredibly empathetic being.”

Dogs are ideal for kids of any age, depending on the breed, the actress who divorced in 2006 admits.

“It’s good for kids to grow up around dogs,” she says. “A couple of my son’s friends are terrified of dogs because they’ve had bad experiences with dogs. If they grow up around a puppy or an older dog, I think it’s good for them.”

What does she love about being a mom?

“Being a mom has made me just a better person in every way. I’m much less self-centered. My heart grows every day through struggling and love of my kids. It helps balance everything else – the work and the world. It helps keep me grounded and in perspective of what is really meaningful to me. It helps me be conscious of the way that I conduct myself in my relationships and in the world.”

How does being a mom influence the men she dates post-divorce?

“I’m pretty careful about who I associate myself with,” she cautions.

Mariska Hargitay Suffers From Collapsed Lung

Several news sources are reporting that Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order SVU) is suffering from a pneumothorax - or a collapsed lung. The story was told exclusively to Access Hollywood by a rep for Law & Order SVU. Here’s a link to the story from Access Hollywood

I wondered why she was absent from the Golden Globes – and this must have been her reason.

According to The New York Post:

Hargitay shot the bulk of her episodes before the holiday break and won't miss any time on the NBC series since she doesn't appear in every episode, her rep told The Post late yesterday. A collapsed lung--which can result from an accident or happen naturally--occurs when there's a buildup of air in the space between the lung and chest wall. It's not known how Hargitay suffered the partially collapsed lung.

The Defamer indicates this was caused by a skiing or sledding accident that occurred when Mariksa was on vacation.

Get well Mariska!

Richard Belzer to Appear on The View on January 14

Richard Belzer (Law & Order SVU) is scheduled to appear on ABC’s “The View” on January 14 2009, along with comedian Richard Lewis. They will be talking about their live show, “An Evening with Richard Lewis & Richard Belzer & the Belzonics” which takes place on January 17 at 8:00 PM at Town Hall, 123 West 43rd Street, New York, NY.

Of course, with Richard Belzer, you never know what he’ll say when he's put in front of a microphone, camera, or audience. He made news recently saying that NBC is a desperate and dying network (ouch). One can only imagine what the ladies of The View will get him to say next.

Chris Meloni Appears on Late Night With Conan O’Brien

Chris Meloni (Law & Order SVU) appeared on Late Night With Conan O’Brien on January 7. The video clip is below. At one point, Chris shouts out something that is somewhat unintelligible, and almost sounds like he is referencing a certain part of trombonist “LaBamba’s” anatomy. This seemed really odd and even Conan seemed to wonder how to get out of it. Chris also says that the “worldwide response” to him from guys is that their wives or girlfriends love him, but that guys won’t admit to watching the show.

Jeff Goldblum Talks With Moving Pictures Magazine About “Adam Resurrected”

Two short video clips from an interview that Jeff Goldblum (Law & Order Criminal Intent) had with Moving Pictures Magazine have been made available. I wish I could embed them here, but it seems they can only be viewed on the Moving Pictures Magazine web site. There is no specific date listed as to when this interview was done.

Here are the two links were the interview clips can be accessed. Jeff is talking about his role in his recent film, “Adam Resurrected.”

Clip #1 – Jeff talks about what motivated him to take up the challenge of this film and how he developed the role

Clip #2 - Jeff talks about the research involved in making a Holocaust-era film, and how this role changed him.

By the way, there are rumors that Law & Order Criminal Intent will be restarting the season on Thursday, February 5, 2009, but so far there is nothing official from the USA Network or NBC Universal. I suppose considering their recent handling of the false start for this show last fall, I remain a little skeptical about this start date. It could very well be true...but then again, maybe not. Jeff Goldblum and Vincent D’Onofrio fans are getting anxious, and I don’t blame them. Stay tuned!

Richard Belzer Chats With the NY Post

Here’s an interesting interview by the New York Post with Richard Belzer of Law & Order SVU. He gives a lot of interesting information about what makes “The Belz” tick.

Q&A WITH RICHARD BELZER
THE UNCONVENTIONAL ACTOR/COMIC/WRITER (PHEW) TALKS DOGS, ANCIENT HISTORY AND BEING TOO FUNNY FOR THE ARMY

By LARRY GETLEN
January 4, 2009

Richard Belzer is best known for playing detective John Munch on "Law and Order: SVU" (and on any other series that'll have him - he's played Munch on more shows than any actor has played the same character in TV history). But his start in show biz was on the stage. Belzer is known for his unconventional attitudes - he proudly embraces the term "conspiracy theorist" - and this has made him one of the top comedians throughout the '70s. Last year, Belzer brought his comic sensibility to publishing with "I Am Not A Cop!" a book that featured an actor named Richard Belzer who plays a TV detective named John Munch. But for those who'd like to see that sensibility in its original habitat, Belzer appears with Richard Lewis at Town Hall on January 17.

You've played Detective John Munch on 10 separate tV shows. At this point, do shows want Munch on just because of the record?

I think it's more flattering than that. People are so enamored of the character that when they see in a script, "detective," they think, let's bring Belzer in. They did that on "The X-Files," on "Arrested Development," on "Sesame Street." It's been so much fun.

You recently released a novel with yourself as the main character. Why did you take that approach?

I've always been fascinated by the confluence of celebrity and reality, and I'm a big fan of film noir. I wanted to combine all those elements into a kind of 21st-century, noir-mystery comedy. The idea that I'm an actor who plays a detective on TV who gets caught up in a real crime appealed to me because it gives me fictional license, but I can use a lot of reality. It's kind of a reality novel.

You started your movie career in the cult classic "The Groove Tube," from the early '70s , which was druggie and raw. Can you imagine a movie like that succeeding today?

No. We laid out the joke in a very prosaic way because we were kind of the first people to do satire of movies and television at that level.

The "Weekend Update" format for "SNL" and the "Goodnight, and have a pleasant tomorrow" tag line came out of "The Groove Tube," didn't they?

Yes. One of Lorne Michaels' direct influences in creating "Saturday Night Live," by his own admission, was "The Groove Tube."

It's hard to imagine, but you were in the Army. How did you get along there?

I was discharged - under honorable conditions - for being non-adaptable to military service. I was deemed too funny to carry a gun. I was in for seven months, went through basic training, got a top secret clearance to become a radio intercept operator, went AWOL once. I was too funny for words and was asked to leave. I didn't want to kill anybody. Call me crazy.

HOw did having testicular cancer change your life?

There are a lot of cliches about near-death experiences, how they make you appreciate life more. I think they're much exaggerated. It was very sobering and you do learn to value things you hadn't before, but life is so complex. You still have to earn everything. I wouldn't recommend having cancer for the wisdom.

* "[Bob] Cousy was one of the early players to dribble behind his back and do behind-the-back passes. He was a legendary ball player in the '50s and early sixties that I tried to copy."

* "I take photos. I shoot a lot of landscapes and flowers, people and animals. I'm getting ready to publish a book of my photographs. I'm using Panasonic Lumix with a Leica lens. It's a small digital camera that takes incredible pictures, and it's become an opiate for me. It gives me hours of unending joy."

* "If you Google my name and 'Bebe,' there's thousands of entries of my dog on red carpets. The photographers will say, 'Bebe, over here!' They don't care about me anymore."

* "I have a house in Bozouls, in the southwest of France. It's a little farming village. [My wife and I]have a beautiful 500-year-old stone mill house on a waterfall. The day-to-day lifestyle of French country living is totally antithetical to anything I do in America."

* "I'm a big, big fan of black and white film noir. Films like 'Out of the Past' and 'Murder, My Sweet.' The idea that the films of the '30s and '40s were coming out of the Depression and World War II, I'm fascinated by the psychology of what purpose they filled. Some of them were light and frothy, some were anti-prison-abuse films, and Hollywood was really raw and evolving."

* "I'm a bag [I think they meant big] fan of Roman history, particularly the period prior to and after Julius Caesar's reign. On some level they were so incredibly advanced and yet barbaric at the same time. Things haven't changed much."
