Steve Zirnkilton: The “Voice” of Law & Order

photo imdb.com
Have you ever wondered about the guy who voices all the introductions for all of the Law & Order franchise episodes? You know, “The Voice” that announces, for example, “In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police, who investigate crime, and the district attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories.”

That is the voice of Steve Zirnkilton, the guy who has the distinction of being listed in as “narrator” for every single episode in the franchise. His voice is heard in every episode, and there isn’t any one else in the entire Law & Order universe that can make that claim.

“The Maine Campus” (A University of Maine student publication) recently conducted an interview with Steve, titled Steve Zirnkilton: The man behind the voice. Some excerpts:

MC: What would the big break in your voiceover career be?

Zirnkilton: Well, anyone who knows anything about my career would know there's only one answer to that. That's when I had the opportunity to do "Law & Order." I played an on-camera detective in the pilot episode, and then I got a call from a big time producer who said he had something he wanted me to record. I had no idea what it would be, and he stood next to me as it was read, and he told me how he wanted it done. And that was that.

MC: You were on-screen for the pilot episode?

Zirnkilton: That's right, the first episode, actually the only episode that didn't have my intro. So that's the trivia part of it. I'm the only one who's been in every episode.

MC: The only "Law & Order" person to be on every episode? That's a pretty good claim to fame.

Zirnkilton: [laughs] Yeah, it's a good trivia question.

MC: Is that something you want to get into again, making more on-screen appearances?

Zirnkilton: It's something I've always enjoyed. I've had the opportunity to do some theater since then. It's been very enjoyable and it wasn't something our kids were interested in, so I got away from that. I did some on-camera commercials for "Law & Order," which people can see on TNT's Web site. But it's fun, and you never know.

You can read the full interview here. It's interesting to learn about the man behind the voice!

Sam Waterston and Lincoln’s Cooper Union Speech

With the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday coming up on February 12, and as Sam Waterston (Law & Order) has frequently performed in many shows as Lincoln, I thought this was a good time to highlight Sam’s special reading of one of Lincoln’s important speeches.
In May of 2004, Sam reenacted Lincoln’s Cooper Union (New York) speech, which, despite not being a very well known speech by most Americans, is considered one of Lincoln’s most important. It is believed that this speech contributed greatly to Lincoln being elected president, even though he wasn’t even the nominee for the presidency at the time he made the speech.

In this video, “Sam Waterston Delivers Abraham Lincoln's Cooper Union Speech” (link to C-Span), Sam delivers an impassioned performance as Lincoln. The speech is lengthy – a little over an hour – but Sam’s performance at the end should not be missed. Sam appears about 15 minutes into the video if you want to save yourself some time in viewing the entire program.

If you’d like to read along, you can find a transcript of the speech here, along with an audio only of the same reading by Sam. Further reading about Sam’s performance can be found in this New York Times article published in May of 2004, here.

Ice-T Mentors Through Music and Tupperware

Yes, you read that right. Times must be changing, and this probably isn’t your mom’s Tupperware anymore. According to PR Newswire, Ice-T (Law & Order SVU) is partnering with Tupperware to host an interactive hip-hop workshop for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, followed by a celebratory Tupperware Party benefiting the organization. In celebration of Black History Month and inspired by our country's renewed declaration to "give back," now more than ever the importance of 'mentorship through music' is relevant and impactful.” They go on to say that Ice-T will share his “inspiration and motivation for creating music, and will be discussing his emotional and creative process behind writing raps.”

It is also being reported that he will be having a star-studded Tupperware Party in Manhattan, with net proceeds from the sale of Tupperware benefitting the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Guests will enjoy signature 'Ice-Tini' cocktails and hors d'oeuvres served on Tupperware products, as well as music provided by celebrity DJ, D-Nice.” I can only image what Ice-T’s wife Coco will be wearing…maybe some strategically placed Tupperware bowls?

Ice-T has also helped to promote Tupperware before. You may recall that Ice-T hosted a Super Bowl Tupperware party in 2008, calling it the “Tupperbowl”. (I don’t make up this stuff, I just report it.)

Personally, I find Ice-T and Tupperware a very odd combination. Still, all kidding aside, it is nice that he and Tupperware are partnering for a good cause.

Bowling With Sam Waterston

Sam Waterston (Law & Order) took off his DA hat and put on the bowling shoes for a special event. He participated the 23rd annual Second Stage Theatre All-Star Bowling Classic fundraiser at Lucky Strike Lanes and Lounge in New York City on February 2, 2009.Here are a few photos in case you don’t believe me. I found the one of him standing over a group of bowling balls a little funny. (Anthony Edwards, formerly of the NBC show ER, is also in some of the pictures. I still get choked up every time I see him. He had probably one of the saddest death scenes ever on television.)
