Alicia Witt to Guest Star on “Mentalist” Season Finale

Super-scooper Michael Ausiello reports that Alicia Witt (Law & Order Criminal Intent, USA) will guest star on the season finale of “The Mentalist.” She will play a “luminously beautiful piano player who used to date the madman, the myth, the legend known as Red John.” Ausiello also says that there is a big twist involved, too.

Regular readers of this blog will recall that Alicia Witt is very skilled at playing the piano (Law & Order CI’s Alicia Witt Plays Joe’s Pub). It sounds like the piano-playing part of the role won’t be a stretch for her. I’ll be watching!

Fred Thompson on CNN’s American Morning

Fred Thompson (Law & Order), who is now a talk show host, was on CNN’s American Morning today, making some political comments that I don’t agree with. (If you want to read how I feel about politicians who wish for failure, I have it on my editorial blog, The Frequent Critic, here. I won’t force my opinions on Law & Order fans!)

Here’s a short video of Fred’s appearance on the show.

Anthony Anderson Break Dances – Photos

Anthony Anderson (Law & Order) decided to break into dance – or maybe it was break dance – at a Knicks vs. King’s basketball game, which took place on Mar. 19th 2009. His co-star, and boss on Law & Order, S. Epatha Merkerson, was there to witness Anderson’s performance, probably with the cell phone ready to call 911 for a “bus” in case Anderson hurt himself. If I were him, I am not sure I would put all that weight on my head…would you? Enjoy the photos!

Sam Waterston Backs Bipartisan Legislation

Sam Waterston (Law & Order) fans will recall when Sam got involved in politics when he was helping out the Unity ’08 group, which met a quick demise. But, according to The Huffington Post, Sam is getting back into the swing of things by speaking out on the Elections Now Act. Here is the story from The Huffington Post. (NOTE - See ABC News Video link after the article for an appearance by Sam.)

Sam Waterston Pushes Bipartisan Fair Elections Now Act

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is set to propose legislation this week that would create a public election financing system that would keep candidates competitive while, among other things, banning lobbyist money in elections.

"Law & Order" star Sam Waterston, in an interview with the Huffington Post, said the time is ripe.

Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Arlen Specter (R-Penn.), will be introducing the Fair Elections Now Act on Wednesday. And they are expected to be supplemented by a coterie of Representatives in the House, according to advocates for the legislation.

Proponents of the legislation, including, say that it would eliminate the predominance of special interests in politics without tilting the playing field against those politicians that chose to take part. They believe it's the right time for an election-financing system overhaul.

For starters, in the White House sits a president who has supported such measures -- first in the Illinois State Senate and then in Congress.

"I think this is a sort of, 'if you build it he will come' situation," Waterston said. "[Obama] does have a lot of things that he has to deal with, but if past is prologue, the likelihood of him supporting this is very strong ... If the Congress were to present this as something they would wanted to do in regulating their own house, it seems to me the odds are really very good that he would be behind it."

Moreover, with a steady stream of scandals related to campaign contributions, and with the financial sector under intense scrutiny for lobbying lawmakers, proponents of the clean elections law believe they can succeed where past efforts have failed.

"How different would our conversation about AIG be if we knew that $10 billion hadn't gone into federal elections from the financial sector over the last twenty years?" asked Waterston. "We might have different opinions, we might like or dislike legislators' ideas about what to do about the crisis, but we wouldn't be wondering if any one of them were on the take or whether their opinion was being colored by who was helping them get elected. It would just change the conversation radically."

Asked whether he would like to test drive a public-financing system in a run for office of his own, the famed T.V. actor replied: "Heck no. I want to be the guy who helps people who really know about this."

The bill would provide congressional candidates who choose to participate with a pool of public funds, along with many additional avenues by which to raise cash and buy air time on television.

Under the Fair Elections Now Act proposal, House and Senate candidates could raise a large number of small contributions -- limited to $100 -- from their home states. Public funding for House candidates would kick in once that person collected 1,500 contributions and raised more than $50,000. The candidate would then receive $900,000 in Fair Elections funding: 40 percent for the primary and 60 percent for the general election.

Senate candidates would have to raise a contributions -- again limited to $100 -- that came to ten percent of the primary Fair Elections funding in order to qualify. That candidate would then receive $1.25 million plus another $250,000 per congressional district in their state, with the money split 33 percent for the primary and 67 percent for the general election.

The candidates would still be allowed to raise small donations once in the system, again only from to within their home state but with every dollar matched by four from the Fair Elections Fund. And when it came to purchasing television time, a candidate in the public system would receive a 20 percent reduction from the lowest broadcast rates. Winning primary candidates would be eligible for media vouchers following their victories.

The goal, those who have crafted the legislation say, is to wean politicians off the traditional reliance on big-time donors while freeing up time for them to actually legislate and/or talk to voters.

"Members complain about how much time they have to spend fundraising," said one official. "Well ,here is a way out for them."

As for the support of both parties in Congress -- integral to any passage of legislation -- the official said that he expected "additional Republican sponsorship in the Senate as well as some in the House."

A Law & Order St. Patrick’s Day With Jack McCoy

What would St. Patrick’s Day be without our favorite Irish Law & Order character, Jack McCoy? Here’s a short video with Jack – along with some of the Law & Order ladies – dancing it up for St. Patrick’s Day. (The first half is a video I made last year but never finished it, the other is a rerun from last year.)

Have a great St. Patrick’s Day, and don’t drink too much green beer or Irish Whiskey!

Jeff Goldblum Joins “Baster” Cast

Several sources are reporting that Jeff Goldblum – who hopefully we will really get to see on Law & Order Criminal Intent (USA) has joined the cast of the movie “The Baster.” Here’s an excerpt of the story from the Hollywood Reporter:

Jeff Goldblum heats up 'Baster' film

Jeff Goldblum has joined the cast of "The Baster," Mandate's romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman.

Directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon, the story follows a man (Bateman) whose female best friend (Aniston) plans to become pregnant with artificial insemination, but he replaces the preferred sample with his own. Seven years later, she returns to New York with her son, and he is forced to live with the secret that he is the child's real father.

Goldblum will get to exercise his comedy chops by playing Bateman's business partner and confidant, whose idea of working out is walking slowly on the treadmill while eating a candy bar.

Jeremy Sisto To Be a Daddy

Celebrity Baby Blog reports that Jeremy Sisto (Law & Order, NBC) and his fiancée Addie Lane are expecting a baby. They also report that Addie is seven months pregnant and she is carrying a girl. Sisto had commented that “We haven’t picked a name, but we’re open to suggestions!” I don't recommend letting Dick Wolf have a say, since he probably picked Sisto's character's odd name "Cyrus Lupo" on Law & Order.

This will be Jeremy's first child. A picture of Jeremy and Addie can be found on the Celebrity Baby Blog. Congratulations to both of them!

Kathryn Erbe, Spokesperson North Shore Animal League America for 2009

Actress Kathryn Erbe of TV's Law & Order: Criminal Intent Is National Spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America's Tour for Life(R) 2009

PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y., March 6 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, and television and film actress Kathryn Erbe announce the ninth annual Tour For Life(R), the world's largest cooperative adoption event.

Since its inception in 2001, Tour For Life, in partnership with Purina(R), has placed thousands of homeless animals with loving families. In 2009, Tour For Life will stop in 24 U.S. cities to help save pets' lives across America. It is the Animal League's month-long national cooperative initiative with animal shelters promoting the importance and advantages of adopting shelter animals as a life-saving measure. This year, the tour celebrates mixed-breed dogs under the banner of the newly launched American Mutt-i-grees(TM) Club (www.muttigrees.org).

"As a pet owner and animal lover, this life-saving tour is truly close to my heart. Adopting from a shelter is the right choice," said spokesperson Erbe, whose own mixed-breed Lilah was adopted from North Shore Animal League America. With more than 25 million mixed-breed dog owners in America, Erbe and the Tour For Life participants believe that the 2009 Tour For Life will help enhance the way animal lovers and potential adopters view mixed-breed pets, promote shelter adoptions and help reduce euthanasia rates.

For one month, beginning the last week in March, the Animal League's Mobile Adoption Units travel two cross-country routes, simultaneously, stopping at scheduled destinations, helping more than 100 shelters and rescue groups find homes for orphaned pets. All pets adopted during Tour For Life receive a free gift from Purina(R). Tour For Life ends with a "Grand Finale" event, hosted by Erbe at FAO Schwarz in New York City on Saturday, April 25, featuring celebrities posing in the world-famous toy store windows with puppies.

Tour For Life's presenting sponsor is the One Hope Network. Developed in conjunction with Purina ONE(R) brand pet food, the One Hope Network is dedicated to transforming the lives of pets and people by supporting the efforts of animal welfare organizations across the country. North Shore Animal League America is an advisory shelter for the One Hope Network. Supporting sponsors include Red Roof and Fort Dodge Animal Health(R).
