As part of its Characters Unite public service campaign to combat intolerance and discrimination, USA will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks with the world television premiere of THE SPACE BETWEEN, starring Oscar® and Golden Globe®-winning actress Melissa Leo (“The Fighter,” “Mildred Pierce,” “Frozen River”). The Academy Award®-winning documentary short TWIN TOWERS, produced by Emmy Award®-winning producer Dick Wolf and Peter Jankowski of the long-running “Law & Order” franchise, will immediately follow.

Both special Characters Unite Films will premiere commercial free on Sunday, September 11, beginning at 9/8c.

From Inception Media Group, THE SPACE BETWEEN was produced, written and directed by Travis Fine (“The Others”). The film, which debuted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, offers a powerful look back on how the tragic events of 9/11 brought diverse people together and renewed the American spirit that what we have in common is stronger than what divides us. In the film, lonely flight attendant Montine McLeod (Leo) befriends a 10-year old Pakistani-American boy, Omar Hassan (Anthony Keyvan, “Lost,” “iCarly”), on a plane grounded in Longview, TX, on the morning of 9/11/01. When Montine discovers that Omar’s father (Phillip Rhys) works in the World Trade Center, she commits to driving the boy back home to his uncertain future in New York City. As they journey across America’s vast heartland in the hours and days immediately following the terrorist attacks, Montine and Omar help each other discover the importance of tolerance, redemption, acceptance and hope.

USA is creating a special minisite at charactersunite.com to provide viewers with information and resources on the key issues addressed in the film, including prejudice, religious intolerance and bullying. A study guide also will be available for educators to download and use in classrooms across the country. Additionally, USA will ask viewers to share their hopes for uniting America and to discuss the key issues in a special Character Chatter at chatter.usanetwork.com.

THE SPACE BETWEEN is executive produced by Lynette Howell. Kristine Fine also produces with her husband Travis Fine. Reimer produced for Inception Media Group. TWIN TOWERS is an Academy Award®-winning short documentary film, directed by Bill Guttentag and Robert David Port, that shares the true story of the profound courage of two brothers, a New York City policeman and fireman. The footage, originally shot for a Dick Wolf reality pilot about a New York City police squad, became the basis for the powerful documentary. The film was awarded an Oscar® for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2002.
