Richard Belzer: “I Am Not A Cop”

Not a cop, just plays one on TV

Richard Belzer’s new novel, ”I Am Not A Cop” has just been released.

USA Today has a great article about the book and about Richard's writing of the book. An excerpt follows; you can find the full article here.

Excerpt from USA Today Article "Richard Belzer is 'not a cop,' but he is an author":

In his book, Belzer, the narrator, says, "I am not a cop. Really. I've just been playing one on television so long that people get a little confused sometimes."

Belzer calls Cop a "reality novel." It's "fiction based on my life. It uses the reality of my job and how people react to me and imagines what if I got mixed up in trying to solve a real crime," which he's never done.

Unlike the fictional Belzer, the real one isn't skilled in martial arts.

"That's Michael Black," Belzer says of his co-writer, an author and former SWAT team leader in Chicago who has a black belt in tae kwon do. "In the novel, I'm imbued with his skills."

Belzer says the plot, which involves the Russian Mob and diamond smuggling, was his idea. As was casting himself in his own novel.

"For years I've been fascinated by the intersection of celebrities and reality," he says, recalling an incident from his days on Homicide: "We were shooting in an alley with prop cop cars. I was holding a prop gun when a real-life shoplifter ran around the corner. He saw me, dropped his bag and put his hands up. Then he recognized me. But by then, a real security guard had caught him."

Sam Waterston Reads The Gettysburg Address

As a companion to my blog entry from yesterday where I posted some information about Sam Waterston (Law & Order) doing a poetry reading for Voice Of America to honor President Abraham Lincoln, here is a recording of Sam Waterston reading Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. I added a picture of Sam (taken from one of his appearances as Lincoln) and the text of the Gettysburg Address so you can read along.

Sam Waterston Honors Lincoln With Poetry

Voice of America has an interesting article about some poets and actors who are helping to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln’s life by reading his poetry. An event sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, celebrated Lincoln's poetic side on September 22 in Washington DC. Sam Waterston (Law & Order), who has played and voiced Lincoln many times, read a poem by Walt Whitman.

Here’s what that VOA had to say about the subject:

Academy Award-nominee Sam Waterston read the poem for the Washington audience. He is best known today for his portrayal of Jack McCoy in the dramatic TV series "Law and Order." But Waterston has often portrayed Lincoln.

"He is such a fascinating figure," Waterston says, "such a great mind, such an unbelievably gifted speaker. I really defy anybody to not be drawn in."

You can also listen to excerpts from the reading, including Sam’s, here.

Mariska Hargitay To Appear For “Day One”

Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order SVU) will be the keynote speaker at the 35th anniversary luncheon for Day One , which was originally founded in 1973 as the Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center. This event will take place at the Westin Providence, Providence, RI, on Nov. 13.

The Day One web site says that Mariska “is a tireless advocate for victims of sexual abuse. Ms. Hargitay says that her inspiration for her character on "SVU" comes from the thousands of victims of sexual assault who don't have a voice and need to be heard, and the people who have dedicated their lives to helping these victims. Her work on SVU prompted her to become involved with several rape crisis centers as well as founding her own foundation called the Joyful Heart Foundation to assist real life survivors of sexual abuse. Ms. Hargitay's support for Children's Advocacy Centers was featured in the April 2008 edition of Redbook magazine.”

Additional information can be found on the web site for Day One.
