Eric Bogosian In “Cadillac Records”

Eric Bogosian (Law & Order Criminal Intent) has a role in the upcoming film, “Cadillac Records.” The film, which opens December 5, is set in the 1950s Chicago, and is about the rise of Chess Records. Bogosian plays Alan Freed.

There also seems to be another familiar Law & Order Criminal Intent face in the movie trailer. Take a look at the pictures from the trailer, you decide. (The person of whom I speak is not listed in the official movie credits at this time.)

You can view the trailer on the official web site for the movie, here, and also below.

Hmmm..could this be...?

Sure looks like Vincent D'Onofrio to me.

A Law & Order Holiday Elf Dance Party

It seems like just yesterday that I posted a blog entry on my All Things Law & Order blog celebrating ”Christmas in July.” The message included a video with the faces of Law & Order franchise favorites doing some winter Holiday dances. As the Thanksgiving season is here, it was time for some new performances to get everyone into the holiday spirit. So, for your entertainment, please enjoy a short video of your Law & Order favorites faces - such as Sam Waterston, Vincent D'Onofrio, Mariska Hargitay, and Chris Meloni - as they do their best dancing elf impersonations. Hopefully they all have a sense of humor.

Here’s the original Holiday Dance video, in case you didn’t see it before:

Sam Waterston Speaks at Fordham Law School Forum

As I mentioned here on my blog last May , Sam Waterston was to appear at Fordham The Fordham Law School’s Forum on Law, Culture & Society.

Here’s the story on Sam’s appearance on November 19, from the Fordham University web site (you can find a small picture of Sam from the event on the site):

Sam Waterston Discusses Life and Craft at Fordham Law Forum

The exploits of fictional New York City assistant district attorney Jack McCoy were front and center on Nov. 19, as actor Sam Waterston sat down to discuss his portrayal of one of television’s most famous lawyers.

The actor drew a packed house to the Time Warner Center, where two overflow rooms accommodated those eager to hear the thoughts of the star, a staple on Law & Order for much of its 19 seasons.

The appearance, “Atticus Finch in the Flesh: A Conversation with Law & Order’s Sam Waterston,” was presented by Fordham Law School’s Forum on Law, Culture and Society.

As McCoy, Waterston appears in gripping courtroom scenes that sometimes show him victorious in his prosecutions, but not always. That uncertainty is part of what makes the show successful, he told Thane Rosenbaum, director of the forum and John Whelan Distinguished Lecturer in Law at Fordham.

“Maybe people just think the question of what’s fair is endlessly fascinating, whether it turns out that a particular episode seems to have come to a fair conclusion or not,” Waterston said. “Either way, the appetite is still the same.”

Rosenbaum noted that stories of fairness have been a staple of history, including the Old Testament story of Job. Waterston, a Yale University graduate who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the movie The Killing Fields, embraced the comparison.

“Job is sort of a Law & Order, because the question of how to define justice remains unanswered. Isn’t God’s statement to Job, ‘Shut up, I’m God?’” he said to laughs from the audience.

“Job’s response to the way he’s experiencing life is what we hope to evoke in the audience, which is ‘This is not right; surely it could be run better!’” Waterston said. ‘I think we’re doing a public service, because if it whets people’s appetite for real fairness, then it’s doing a good service.”

The conversation was interspersed with clips of some of the most powerful courtroom scenes of Jack McCoy, including ones of him going after a reckless gun manufacturer and a pedophile. His character’s prosecution of the latter leans dangerously close to being too zealous, prompting Rosenbaum to ask whether Waterston ever disagreed with a decision his character made.

“I made a whimsical decision really early on, which was to unquestionably embrace, whatever position the writers thought Jack McCoy ought to have, and to only argue about whether the way it played out was credible or whether there was a more interesting way to go about it,” Waterston said.

The most poignant part of the evening came when an audience member asked Waterston about Jerry Orbach, who played Det. Lenny Briscoe on the show for 12 years. Although Orbach died of cancer in 2004, Waterston said he was still very much alive in his heart.

“I only know one joke, and it’s because he taught me one that stuck. It’s extremely simple. A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, ‘Why the long face?’ It’s perfect for me because it’s so little to remember,” he said.

“Montaigne said that illness and pain makes us all small,” he continued. “We can all be brave in the face of death, but being incapacitated and in pain, we all become shrimps. Except for Jerry, he didn’t. He was just a fabulous guy.”

Founded in 1841, Fordham is the Jesuit University of New York, offering exceptional education distinguished by the Jesuit tradition to approximately 14,700 students in its four undergraduate colleges and its six graduate and professional schools. It has residential campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan, a campus in Westchester, and the Louis Calder Center Biological Field Station in Armonk, N.Y.

Angie Harmon and Baby Bump at Vogue Dinner

Angie Harmon (Law & Order), along with her ever-growing baby bump, were spotted at a dinner for designer Alberta Ferretti, which was hosted by Vogue. The dinner was held on November 12, at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood, California.

Angie and husband Jason Sehorn already have two daughters: Finley Faith, 5, and Avery Grace, 3. Baby #3 is reported to be due sometime in February.

Here are two photos of the glowing Angie - wearing black probably because it's "slimming" - at the event.

Mariska Hargitay Speaks For “Day One”

As I reported in early October, Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order SVU) was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the 35th anniversary luncheon for Day One on Nov. 13 in Providence Rhode Island. Day One is a sexual assault and trauma resource center that was originally founded in 1973 as the Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center.

Here’s the story from the Providence Journal, which talks about Mariska’s appearance at the event:

Law and Order star puts focus on Day One’s work

By Amanda Milkovits
Journal Staff Writer

PROVIDENCE –– Her name is Cindy, and nearly 30 years ago she was walking home from college in Providence when someone grabbed her from behind.

A stranger dragged her into the bushes, tore off her clothes and raped her. And then he tried to club her to death with rocks.

The 20-year-old woman barely escaped with her life. And when she was brought to the hospital, a doctor called on a new agency to help the young rape victim.

It was the Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center, now known as Day One, a phrase meant to signal the organization as the first place for sexual assault victims to get help. The center was created 35 years ago to advocate for sexual assault victims of all ages, to educate the public about the crimes and to work toward prevention.

Back in 1973, the atmosphere was different for victims, who were sometimes shamed or blamed for the crimes, and when marital rape wasn’t considered a crime. The center was established to support and empower victims, and it eventually grew to include the Children’s Advocacy Center for evaluation, evidence gathering and treatment of young sexual assault victims. Just last year, Day One provided services for 14,000 people. About 66 percent of the victims were children.

Cindy still remembers the kindness of the Providence police officers, who caught her assailant, and the justice she found in the courts, which sentenced her 16-year-old attacker to six years in prison.

Above all, Cindy remembers the never-flagging compassion and help from the center’s advocates, how they guided her and her family through the aftermath. “At no point in time did they leave my side, or my family’s side,” she said yesterday, outside a fundraiser luncheon held at The Westin Providence to commemorate Day One’s 35th anniversary.

She was one of about 400 people attending the $125-a-plate fundraiser luncheon, and about 100 people purchased $500 tickets for a private reception and photo with the event’s keynote speaker, actress Mariska Hargitay, who plays sex-crimes detective Olivia Benson on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Hargitay is also the president of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which offers rape survivors “healing retreats” in Hawaii that include swimming with dolphins.

As Hargitay spoke at the luncheon, she recalled letters from fans who told her that they had been sexually assaulted but were afraid to seek help. (Peg Langhammer, Day One’s executive director, says that although statistics show that one in eight Rhode Island women are sexually assaulted, it’s estimated that more than 74 percent of sexual assaults are never reported to the police.)

“They said, ‘I was raped when I was 15. I’m 40 now and I’ve never told anyone.’ … ‘My father is doing things to my sister and I want him to stop. Will you help me?’ ” Hargitay said of the letters. She paused in the silence and appeared to become teary. “I’m a crier,” she explained to the crowd. “But [sexual assault] is just so prevalent. It’s so good we get to talk about this.”

Hargitay said that the letters, coupled with her own trauma of the death of her mother, Jayne Mansfield, who died in a car crash when Hargitay was 3, and her own life-changing car crash at 34, motivated her to form the nonprofit foundation to help sexual assault victims heal by swimming with dolphins.

“I look back on the two accidents that profoundly changed my life, and I feel sad about them,” said Hargitay, now 44. But she said she was grateful for the moments that came after her crash –– her marriage, her son, her role on Special Victims Unit.

“I didn’t know that I’d be on a TV show that would be so much more, or that I’d give voice to victims of sexual assaults,” Hargitay said. “I didn’t know that I would be part of the effort to change the way a country dialogues about this.”

She praised the work of Day One, and the courage of Cindy, who attended the event with her family and who appeared in a video for Day One shown at the fundraiser.

Cindy spoke to a Journal reporter and in a video on projo.com, although she asked that her last name and out-of-state residence not be identified; she still fears her attacker will find her. But as her husband stood nearby, Cindy spoke with strength as she related how the attack had changed her life.

“Believe in yourself. Make every moment count. Don’t wait,” she said. “Because you never know when it can be taken away from you.”

Vincent D’Onofrio at “New Group” Event

Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order Criminal Intent) was a vice-chair of the The New Group’s 2008 Gala which was held on November 10 at Pier 60, Chelsea Piers in New York City. The event honored actor Ethan Hawke, who was the recipient of the Third Annual Michael Mendelson Award for his “outstanding commitment to theatre.”

The New Group describes themselves as “an artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. While constantly evolving, we maintain an ensemble approach to all our work and an articulated style of emotional immediacy in our acting and productions. In this way, we seek a theater that is adventurous, stimulating and most importantly "now" — a true forum for the present culture.”

Anyway, I look at this as just an excuse to show this picture of Vincent from the event.

Some Jeff Goldblum Humor

For all you Jeff Goldblum fans, here is a little parody put together by Seth MacFarlane who has a bit of fun with Jeff Goldblum’s distinctive mannerisms. I can only imagine what they will do with him once his episodes begin to air on Law & Order Criminal Intent. One thing is for sure, I am not sure I would want to eat “Jeff Goldblum Wafers.” Too chatty!

Jamey Sheridan to Guest on Eli Stone

TV Guide is reporting that Jamey Sheridan, the former Captain James Deakins of Law & Order Criminal Intent, will be a guest star on the ABC series Eli Stone (episode 11). He will be playing a client of Stone’s.

TV Guide goes on to say that “Sheridan will guest-star on the ABC dramedy as a Dan Rather-esque evening news anchor who is "banished" to 5 am Siberia when his reporting starts raising the hackles of network advertisers. Eventually, the newsman is canned, though Eli & Co. must navigate around the sticky wicket of an incriminating email in which Sheridan's character effectively quit, thus voiding his lucrative, multi-year contract.”

Sam Waterston, Water Boy

Here’s a video of Sam Waterston (Law & Order) handing out water to voters standing in line in Philadelphia. Notice how the pushy on-air commentator grabs him and pulls away from fans because she’s on the air. Poor guy, he's just trying to help the voters standing in that long line.

I think Sam is the hardest working person out of everyone in the Law & Order universe. And he always finds time to give his time to people and worthy causes. What a guy!
